Betting Review: Tottenham 4 – 3 Leeds United

by Dan King under the supervision of Lucas Mondelo

The hosts were the winners in the 1×2 market with odds of 1.63 which means betting on Tottenham has produced profits of 63% on average to the gamblers that believed on them.

In the Asian Handicap markets, however, the average bets on -1 and +1 lines were void as the market stabilized with odds around 2.0 at those lines.

In the Over/under Asian Handicap market, the winner odds around 2.0 were over 3 goals, but in secondary retail markets, over 6.5 goals @ full time would have paid incredible 15.70 odds on average!

Match report: Tottenham Hotspurs v Leeds

It was another uncomfortable 90-minute rollercoaster ride on Saturday afternoon for the Spurs fans in their 4-3 win over lowly Leeds United.

The plucky visitor held a brief lead on three occasions but crucially were never able to sustain it longer than 15 minutes, eventually losing the game 4-3 despite going ahead 2-3 on ‘76.

In answer to his increasing critics that dislike his negative tactics and dull football, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte had the last laugh before the World cup break with this hugely entertaining fightback victory.

The hosts were three times behind but thanks to a key showing from the returning Kulusevski and brace scoring Uruguayan midfielder Bentancur, Tottenham held 4th place with this enthralling 4-3 win.

It was a frenetic contest from start until finish, with Spurs just having the edge in possession and overall threat of danger, but at the same time, they never were in control due to poor defending and lack of concentration.

Leeds didn’t respect the host and had strong spells where they moved the ball smartly and forced Tottenham onto the back foot, and when big openings came their finishing was admirable.

The Leeds opener came from sloppy Emerson and Dier defending on 15 minutes, with the inform Summervile beating Lloris from inside the area.

A controversial leveller from a corner saw Kane fire Spurs level with the run of play on 25 minutes. Leeds were hoping VAR would bring doubt over the goal due to contact by Lenglet on suspect keeper Meslier, but the northern club regained a lead just before the break with a clean and powerful Rodrigo volley.

Spurs did not seem to panic, and fans expected a second half recovery, their hopes and belief increased when the home side levelled with the run of play. The goal came from a rare source as Welsh centre back Ben Davies joined the attack and fired through a crowd to make it 2-2 early in the 2nd period.

Tottenham failed however to build on that goal and Leeds soon wrestled back momentum, scoring a third on 76 minutes from a perfectly placed shot from Rodrigo, his second of the match.

Tottenham then staged a swift and devasting comeback which was inspired by Kulusevski and two goal hero Bentancur, with the Swede setting up the Uruguayan hero for the winner on 83 minutes.

It was the Londoner’s first lead of the afternoon, but Conte saw his team manage it professionally, something Leeds never did. With superior fitness and more control in their football and mentality, Spurs rode out the final minutes easily and Leeds fell apart, their already dwindling hopes dropped further with a red card on 85.

Summary and looking ahead

Despite the frustration and scares over almost 90% of this contest, the overall feeling was relief and satisfaction given the victory and the character on display to fight back for the positive result.

Moving forward the club should feel proud and optimistic given where they are despite the significant players missing through injury including Kulusevski, Richarlison, Romero and Son Heung-Min.

For Spurs fans right every negative in their own club is amplified by how impressive their bitter North London rivals are looking right now. With Arsenal sitting top by five points in the EPL it is near on impossible for a Tottenham supporter to be genuinely happy with football and that is a fact.

From a more considered angle, however, qualifying first from the champions league group and sitting in 4th spot in the Premier League would have been gladly accepted by most fans before the season began, especially had they known all senior attackers but Kane would be out injured for a handful of games.

It is probable that barring setbacks while on international duty between now and late December, Conte will have a much stronger XI when domestic football returns.

This includes the four important men previously missing that were named above plus Lucas Moura, another exciting attacker plagued with injury since August. And with this in mind and reinforcements anticipated in the January window, the Lilly whites should be looking at 2023 with optimism and excitement.
